Winter Freeze Shelter
For the 11th year in a row, Youth Services System opened their doors for the Winter Freeze Shelter on November 15th. Normally, the shelter doesn't open until December 15th, but due to an increased demand, YSS opened to women only. Our neighboring Salvation Army had to remodel their structure and close their doors to women and children, and YSS knew they had to step in. Dr. Mercer of Project Hope, a street medical team in Wheeling, contacted us with an urgent note to provide shelter to the women of our community
who were suffering in the cold. Since our opening, we have received about 5 women per night. Next week we will open our doors to men, and expect an increase in individuals to come through our doors.
Each night, those in the shelter are provided with a warm meal, and a bed to sleep. They are also provided with any clothing or hygiene items they may need.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
If you are interested in helping Youth Services System with the Winter Freeze Shelter, there are a number of items that we are always in need of:
Hygiene products: soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, and razors
We also need outdoor products such as tents, tarps, and sleeping bags for the individuals in the shelter to have once we close our doors in March.
