Let's Get the Party Started!

Updated: Nov 5, 2019

We are so excited to finally begin this journey! We hope that this space will be a hub for learning about what we do at Youth Services System and really getting to know the people that we impact. The stories that we share here are personal and authentic. We will strive to be as informative, and hopefully entertaining, as we can be.

To get this ball rolling, we want to introduce ourselves as the forces behind the blog.

This blog is ran by AmeriCorps VISTAs Caryce McGurn and Candace Drzik. We are serving at Youth Services System through West Virginia's Promise, Alliance for Youth. Although we serve at the same site, we are very different people. Take a look below to find out more!

Caryce McGurn

What is your name, role at YSS and how long have you been here?

Caryce McGurn, AmeriCorps VISTA since July of 2019.

Describe yourself in 7 words or less.

Awkward, respectful, intelligent, patient, and kind.

What was your favorite toy as a child?

I used to love to ride my bike, but I enjoyed being outside in general more than I actually played with a specific object.

If you were able to time travel, what time period would you travel to and why?

I wouldn’t go back far, maybe the 1970’s. I’d like to get to know my grandfather on my mothers side. I never got to know him and he passed when I was young. I get a lot of my traits from his side of the family and it would be cool to know where that comes from.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

Right now, I’d go back to Jacksonville, FL and see all my old friends. Being so far away has been really hard and I would really love to get back down there.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

When empty boxes, toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, ect. are left out instead of thrown away.

What makes you laugh the hardest?

My fiancé and my dad. They are the goofiest people I know. It’s never intentional, but that’s the best part.

Who is the kindest person you know?

Anne Franckovich. She is truly a blessing to everyone she meets. Entirely selfless and doesn’t think twice about helping when she’s asked.

What top 3 songs would be on your life soundtrack?

Frankie Smith - Double Dutch Bus

Midnight Star - No parking on the Dance Floor

Spice girls - Wannabe

If your life were a movie, what actor/actress would portray you?

Melissa McCarthy - although I am entirely unworthy of that honor.

Do you prefer a novel or a movie?

A novel! When the movie doesn’t the very developed, exact character I have imagined in my head - I get really upset.

If you could read minds, whose would you read and why?

I don’t think that I want to read anyones mind. I wouldn’t want the power to know something someone doesn’t want me to know. I’m very private myself and be petrified if the shoe was on the other foot.

What is your favorite quote?

“It is not what happens to you that defines you, it’s what you do with it that does.”

Candace Drzik

What is your name, role at YSS and how long have you been here?

Candace Drzik, AmeriCorps VISTA since August.

Describe yourself in 7 words or less.

Compassionate, Sarcastic, Artistic,

Creative.

What was your favorite toy as a child?

Soccer ball.

If you were able to time travel, what time period would you travel to and why?

I would travel back to the "Roaring 20s". The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite books, so I would love to go back and see what life was actually like back then.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I would travel to Santorini Island in Greece. I think it is the most beautiful place, and watching the sunset there is on my bucket list.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

Unnecessary disrespect and ignorance.

What makes you laugh the hardest?

The corniest dad jokes out there.

Who is the kindest person you know?

Muriel Moreland. She mentored me throughout high school, and she would give or do anything for anyone.

What top 3 songs would be on your life soundtrack?

That's What I Love About Sunday- Craig Morgan

Most People Are Good- Luke Bryan

Forever Love - Reba McEntire

If your life were a movie, what actor/actress would portray you?

Maya Rudolf

Do you prefer a novel or a movie?

Novel for sure! I would rather get lost in the words of a book and let my mind create the picture.

If you could read minds, whose would you read and why?

I would read my own mind so maybe I can figure out what is going on in there.

What is your favorite quote?

"Life is a journey to be experienced, not a problem to be solved."- Winnie the Pooh.
